In the original film Gru, was a supervillain before becoming an agent that adopts three orphans as pawns to carry out the biggest heist in history. His life takes an unexpected turn when the little orphans see the evildoer as their potential father.
In our remake we see the former GRU agent become a supervillain adopting a new style that has fooled everyone, enabling him to pull off the biggest heist in history (stealing the U.S). He has mastered the role so well that in the past he has been awarded the World Cup, The Winter Olympics and so much more. He also has his minions, not wanting to steal the moon but instead wanting to take the world and break up anything that looks remotely like a partnership, union or anything that resembles people working together.
With his minions acting as his mouthpiece there is no stopping him, even those who could have considered him a friend/ally (Iran, Venezuela, Cuba) are destined to be mere pawns to be sacrificed on his chessboard.

The irony is that rather than looking strong, this despicable act made Trump and his sidekick (and even his puppet master) look weak. The head of this perceived Superpower shown to be bullying the President of a much smaller embattled nation whilst the rest of the world watched showed everyone that America could no longer be relied upon to help in times of need or indeed have the might to stand up to a Dictator that is reliant on blackmail to achieve his desired outcomes.
