Although this article is about Easter, we at the Guff are not about to start discussing the origins of the festival itself, instead preferring to look at how it is celebrated now.
Again for the third year in a row we see a non story or a story of nonsense about the religious festival becoming disassociated with the consumption of chocolate eggs being resurrected and doing the rounds. This seems to have caused quite a stir in some circles (sections of the Right Wing press and others in the Christian religion). Now you’d think that with our Oceans choking on plastic (the weight of some easter eggs comprising of more than 50% packaging) and so many in the West choking on their high calorie diet (UK being the most obese nation in Europe) that the separation of this celebration of gluttony and the true nature of Easter would actually be welcomed rather than frowned upon.
Maybe the reason for this comes down to profit rather than prophet, for it would seem in this day and age we worship at the altar of Capitalism and the message reverberating in the ears of the consumer is Greed is God rather than the sound of ancient biblical text. Easter is fast becoming another religious festival that has been quietly hijacked/kidnapped by Capitalism and it is us the more than willing but unsuspecting consumer that seems to be paying the price (financially and ecologically) but what of the true price humankind pays at ignoring it’s true meaning, will life eventually be less sweet?
